Alfred Hitchcock, known for classics like Vertigo, Rear Window and Psycho, is one of the most celebrated film makers of all time. He is quite famous for creeping people out with his twisted practical jokes. His pranks varied from apparent harmless jokes to sadistic humiliation. However, most pranks were found to be simply amusing.
He often engaged his colleagues in his jokes and often enlisted them to help. He used to target all the people whom he thought to be big-headed. One of the best pranks was where pretentious guests were invited to his dinner parties where he would slip whoopee cushions onto their chairs just as they would be sitting.
But the depth of his observation was impeccable. Here are seven quotes by Alfred Thomas Hitchcock that everyone can relate to.
1 When he talked about the realities of Life:
Most of us have a world of our dreams around which we want to shape our lives. But when reality strikes, we fall from cloud 9 to the ground, on our face. Almost all of us fear the failure, and most of the times, that is what reality brings.
2 When he talked of Individuality:
Often, mental health can be tricky. Things that make others feel better might end up making you feel crappy. You avoid stressful situations when you’re anxious which ends up bringing more anxiety. Saturdays become the days for sleeping. You distract yourself from the things you’re worried about. Similarly, you ignore your negative thoughts so they don’t get you down. You start making random to-do lists to give yourself a sense of direction and accomplishment. But in all this, you fail to be yourself.
Remember, every one of us who is able to cross a road without getting hit by a car in a country like India is successful, at some level. Every one of us who is able to bear the excruciating eye burn when mothers cut onions right in the living room, because she cannot miss her favourite daily soap, is strong. So, you don’t need to be like your best friend, you don’t need to be like your colleague, you do not need to be like your neighbour and you do not need to be like your sibling. You just need to remind yourself to be yourself, no matter what the situation is.
3 When he talked of Human Psychology:
He said it all……
4 When he talked of Music:
If there’s anything that fixes everything in this world, it’s music. A human’s relationship with music is so deep that it becomes pretty hard for him to imagine his life without it.
“Music is born into a man like a heartbeat and you can’t rip it out without killing him” – Alfred Hitchcock
5 When he talked about Inspiration:
Ideas come from talking about what you are already doing. Ideas come from change. People credit great ideas to some Eureka moment, but it’s a different story altogether. Oliver Heaviside, a British mathematician, got the idea to develop complex mathematics techniques after examining giant granite blocks. Hence, ideas come from anything and everything.
6 When he talked of Fear:
You might not believe but aspirations always deceive. It’s the devil’s cleverest trap. Aspirations make you expect or anticipate. In the course of anticipation you tire your brain so much that you have no strength to face the actual situation.
7 When he talked about Happiness:
Happiness is a choice, not a result. Nothing will make you happy until you choose to be happy. No person will make you happy until you decide to be happy. Happiness never comes to you. It only comes from you.
“(Happiness is) a clear horizon — nothing to worry about on your plate, only things that are creative and not destructive. I can’t bear quarreling, I can’t bear feelings between people — I think hatred is wasted energy, and it’s all non-productive.”
